Sometimes they come out great. Sometimes they explode.
Tiny imperfections or air pockets must have been inherant in this clay. Almost half of the flower was in tiny shards after firing it! There is a potential for this kind of damage with everything that is put into the kiln. I've just had pretty good luck so far. Too bad, I liked that one. Time to accept that some things just can't be fixed!
